Tsunami alert in South-East Asia: Mondial Assistance Group activates its emergency plan

Mondial Assistance Group reports on all Asian operations two weeks after tsunami

Within hours after the tidal wave struck Asia on 26 December, Mondial Assistance set up a crisis and co-ordination unit, under the responsibility of the Group’s Medical and Operational Directors. Our Thai subsidiary was selected as the crisis unit’s operational and logistics base. Call centres were set up in 8 different countries for several Tour Operators, primarily as a means to centralise information to be able to respond to calls from victims’ families and friends. Up to 20 Mondial Assistance doctors participated on site in rescue operations, establishing contact with the wounded and verifying the treatment they received and organised repatriations according to the patients’ individual conditions.

Mondial Assistance encourages people travelling to countries affected by Avian flu to strictly observe the following advice: avoid all contact with poultry and living pigs, even in markets; avoid all contact with surfaces that appear to be soiled with animal secretions or feces; avoid buying, keeping or bringing back a living animal from these countries, especially ornamental birds; avoid eating raw or lightly cooked food, especially meat and eggs; and to wash hands regularly. It is not necessary to recommend flu vaccinations for people travelling to the affected countries.

Mondial Assistance provides nearly 35000 people in France with GTS tele-assistance services. In the event of difficulty, discomfort or doubt, the GTS system enables people to alert a confidential assistance platform at any time, day or night, and discuss with a trained advisor any type of health problem. The principle is simple: people who benefit from this service wear a necklace or bracelet at all times. The system is mostly used by the elderly, handicapped or ill, and makes it possible for them to remain independent at home, while providing a service which is reassuring to them and their families.

In this first account consolidation, the Mondial Assistance Group, which combines the companies of the Elvia Travel Insurance, Sacnas-Mondial Assistance and World Access groups, reveals revenues of 804 million Euros (up 22 per cent) and net profit of 17.3 million Euros (a 15 per cent increase).
